RunMode — Privacy Policy

Last updated: 15 September 2026

RunMode is a running and endurance-training app for iPhone. It is built around a simple principle: your training and health data stays on your device. This policy explains the few things that leave your device, who receives them, and why — in plain English.

The short version. Almost everything RunMode does happens on your iPhone. Your Apple Health data, workouts, routes, personal bests, notes and coach conversations are stored and processed on the device and are never sent to us — in fact, there is no RunMode server and we never see your data. Three optional features send a limited amount of data to third parties: the AI coach (to Google), and weather (to Apple and to Open-Meteo). We do not track you, run no analytics, show no ads, and never sell your data.

1. Who we are

RunMode ("RunMode", "we", "us") is operated by RunMode Ltd, a data controller based in the United Kingdom.

We are the "controller" of the personal data described below for the purposes of the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.

2. What stays on your device

When you grant RunMode permission to read Apple Health, the app reads and processes the following entirely on your iPhone. This data is not transmitted to us and there is no account or cloud sync:

Because this data lives on your device, you control it directly — deleting the app removes it, and coach conversations can be cleared inside the app at any time (Profile → clear conversations).

3. What leaves your device

There are exactly three features that send data off your device, each to a named third party, each only to make that feature work.

(a) The AI coach — Google Gemini (optional)

If, and only if, you use the AI coach (by opening a coach chat, or by receiving a coaching notification you enabled), RunMode sends the training context needed to answer your question to Google's Gemini API to generate the response. This includes: your readiness score and what fed it, recent workout summaries (activity type, distance, duration, pace, heart-rate zones, training-load ratio), sleep hours, any symptoms or feel notes you logged, your target event, your age, and the messages you type.

We do not send your name, email address, precise location, or any account identifier — Google receives training data, not your identity.

RunMode uses Google's paid Gemini API tier. Under Google's terms for that tier, your prompts and responses are not used to train or improve Google's models; Google retains them only briefly for abuse-detection, safety and legal purposes. The data still leaves your device to Google, so if you would prefer that nothing be sent to a third party, simply do not use the coach — every figure the coach uses is also shown in the app itself. Google's handling is governed by the Google Gemini API terms and the Google Privacy Policy.

(b) Current weather & race-day forecast — Apple WeatherKit

To show current conditions and your race-day forecast, RunMode sends your device's location to Apple WeatherKit. This is handled by Apple under Apple's own privacy terms. See Apple's Privacy Policy and the Apple Weather data sources.

(c) Past-run weather — Open-Meteo

To show the weather a past run happened in, RunMode sends the run's approximate start location (rounded to about 1 km) and its date to Open-Meteo, a weather archive service. No account, identifier, or other data is sent. See the Open-Meteo terms.

4. Our lawful bases (UK GDPR)

Health and fitness data is "special category" data under the UK GDPR, which requires both a lawful basis (Article 6) and an additional condition (Article 9). Our bases are:

ActivityLawful basis (Art. 6)Special-category condition (Art. 9)
On-device processing of your Health dataConsent — you grant Apple Health access and choose to use the appExplicit consent
Sending coaching data to Google GeminiConsent — the coach is optional; you choose to use itExplicit consent
Sending location for weatherConsent — you grant location access for the weather featuresNot applicable (location is not special-category data)

You can withdraw consent at any time by turning off the relevant feature, revoking permissions in iOS Settings, or deleting the app. Withdrawing consent does not affect processing that already happened.

5. What we do not do

6. International transfers

Apple, Google and Open-Meteo may process the limited data described above on servers outside the UK. Where they do, those transfers are covered by the providers' own safeguards (such as UK adequacy regulations or the UK International Data Transfer Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses), as set out in their respective terms linked above.

7. How long data is kept

8. Your rights

Under the UK GDPR you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict or object to the processing of your personal data, and the right to data portability, and to withdraw consent. Because almost all of your data is held on your own device, you can exercise most of these rights directly — you have access to it in the app, and deleting the app or clearing conversations erases it. For anything you cannot do yourself, contact us at info@runmode.app.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk, though we would appreciate the chance to put things right first.

9. Children

RunMode is a general-audience fitness app and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly process the data of children under 16.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected here with a new "Last updated" date.
